Joe Manchin Crosses Aisle, Joins GOP

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin continues to make himself the bane of his own Democratic Party, this time by helping Republicans shoot down a bill that would have entrenched abortion access in federal law. Democrats did not have a serious expectation of passing the legislation, but with the Supreme Court finally engaging in serious consideration about the future of Roe v Wade their efforts in Congress have become increasingly shrill.

Manchin rejects pro-abortion bill

Senator Manchin did not make any significant changes to his own stance on abortion to side with the Republicans;  what the Democrats were proposing was simply far too radical.

The legislation promoted by Chuck Schumer and his party would have given the Democrats the ability to force their extreme abortion policies on even conservative states.

Most Americans are not willing to accept abortion at any point before birth or after the point at which an unborn baby becomes capable of feeling pain.

Congressional Democrats have thrown their weight behind a national policy of allowing abortion at any time and for any reason.

Schumer and others say that their bills are being stopped by Manchin and the Republicans because “right-wing extremists” are trying to force their radical agenda on American women.

In fact,  the abortion laws Schumer and his party support would be regarded as extremist in most of the world, and probably in most of America if voters were confronted with the reality of what they propose.

Congressional Democrats increasingly radicalized

Overly permissive abortion laws are among the factors that have contributed to looming demographic crises in Russia and China; Russia is now desperately trying to fix that problem with anti-abortion measures to stave off a serious decline in population.

What the Democrats want would likely exceed both of these countries in its permissiveness. Even if moral arguments entirely fail to move leftists, we have real world examples which show the disastrous effects of their proposals.

It is also the kind of policy which makes it increasingly unlikely that Schumer and the Democratic leadership will be able to bring Manchin back into the fold.

Attacking Manchin has been popular with the liberal base, but the West Virginia senator remains a reality that Schumer and his party have to deal with in Congress.

With the Senate being as closely contested as it currently is, having an increasingly alienated senator in his party should be something that Schumer is very concerned about.

Democrats are running out of time to pass anything through Congress before the midterm elections, in which Republicans are expected to make gains in both chambers.
