Shop NowThis is the time of the year when all kinds of nasty bugs start to show up.
In Maine, there is one in particular that is raising hell all across the state.
I am speaking of the browntail caterpillar/moth.
Danger!
Kids are often overwhelmed by curiosity when they see a new bug they have not seen before.
I know when I was a kid, we were fearless, picking up caterpillars and allowing them to walk around our hands and up our arms.
Well, if you do that with a browntail, you could wind up in the hospital.
These are poisonous bugs that can cause rashes and even lead to breathing problems if they manage to get you or their hairs are breathed in.
The moths/caterpillars are identified by white dashes that run down their sides and two red dots on their backs.
Here is a local report…
Let your kids know not to pick them up, but they should alert you to them.
If you see a large infestation, you should probably call your local exterminator service before the problem gets out of hand.
