In 2012, the then-24 year old grad student studying psychology at the University of Georgia had a tragic accident that changed her appearance forever.
She was riding on a homemade zip line when it snapped and she crashed into sharp rocks below, leaving her with deep cuts on her calf.
A few days later, she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis—a rare flesh-eating bacteria that can be fatal if not treated properly.
To save her life, all four of Aimee’s limbs were amputated—but instead of giving up in the face of such adversity, she chose to fight for her life and never give up.
In order to inspire others to love their bodies regardless of their “flaws”, Aimee decided to post pictures showing off all her amputations and scars while on vacation in Puerto Rico.

This courageous act has been celebrated as an amazing example of body acceptance and love by many people around the world.
But even more than inspiring others about body image issues, Aimee continues to prove that we can work hard and succeed despite any tragedy or obstacle we might face.
She completed a Ph.D in psychology from University West Georgia and is now a public speaker advocating for those with disabilities—reminding us all that with positivity comes triumph.
No matter what we go through in life or how difficult our circumstances may seem at times, it’s important to remember that there is always something good waiting for us out there if we stay positive and keep pushing forward no matter what comes our way.
Aimee Copeland is living proof that miracles do happen when you have faith in yourself.
