Former Trump Press Secretary and current Governor of Arkansas, Sarah Sanders, just made history.

Even though three of the last four governors have been Republican, and this includes Sanders, Arkansas had a long history of Democrats in power before that.

In fact, before Governor Mike Huckabee in 1996, the state had only one Republican governor after Winthrop left office in 1971.

That means there has been a long line of Democrats appointing liberals to the state Supreme Court.

The last three decades have enabled some changes, which has resulted in conservatives, slowly but surely, being appointed to the bench.

History Made

Having only just taken office several months ago, Sanders was lucky in that she had already been able to appoint a justice.

Sanders put Cody Hiland on the bench, replacing a liberal, and, more importantly, finally, for the first time in the state’s history, giving the bench a conservative lean.

Arkansas Online reported, “State Republicans last year elected the 51-year-old Hiland as chairman of the state party.

“From 2017 to 2020, he served as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas following his appointment by then-President Donald Trump.

“Hiland also served as legal counsel for the Arkansas Department of Public Safety and prosecutor for the 20th Judicial District of Arkansas.”

Sanders, who also made history as the first female governor of the state, added, “Today, I appointed former prosecutor and U.S. attorney Cody Hiland to the Arkansas Supreme Court — marking the first time the Court will have a conservative majority.

“Cody brings decades of legal experience to the job — and I am confident he will serve our state well.

“This is the first time the Arkansas Supreme Court will have a conservative majority, and I know it will have the same effect on our state as it has had on our country.

“He will be there to call balls and strikes, interpreting state law as it is written and leaving the legislating to the Legislature.”

The timing of this could not be better for Sanders.

There is currently a case working its way to the state Supreme Court due to a judge blocking Sanders’ massive overhaul of the educational system in the state.

This was a key platform issue for Sanders, so having a conservative lean means the future is bright for the trailblazing governor.
