The recent wildfires in Maui have caused devastation that is far beyond what anyone could have imagined.

Even worse, it has been reported that there are currently 850 people who are still missing since the fire.

Mayor Richard Bissen has said that over 2,000 names were checked in the two weeks since the blaze and 1,285 of those individuals were found safe.

However, this still leaves a large number of people unaccounted for and many families with fear and anxiety.

It was also confirmed by Mayor Bissen that at least 27 victims have been identified so far with 11 families already being notified.

Law enforcement and coroners have had to face the difficult labor of identifying charred remains which can be emotionally taxing on both them and family members alike.

As if this weren’t enough, cell phone service on the island has not been restored fully which makes finding missing people even harder than it already is.

In order to help locate these missing individuals, FEMA dogs have been brought in to search through city ruins for any remains or clues as to where they may be located.

So far 85% of the search area has been covered but unfortunately most of what is being found are partial remains that are impossible to spot with just human eyesight alone.

The identification process for these dead bodies can take days if you’re lucky or even months or years according to Robert Mann, a forensic anthropologist who helped identify victims from 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers who is now helping out in Maui as well.
