Shop NowAll it took was a wayward basketball to spark another senseless shooting. This one happened in a suburban North Carolina neighborhood. A 6-year-old and her parents were shot Tuesday night “by an angry neighbor who fired at them after a basketball rolled into his yard.” Thankfully, nobody was killed but the dad remains listed in “serious” condition at a Charlotte hospital. Suspected shooter Robert Louis Singletary took off before cops arrived. While a multi-agency manhunt for him raged, he turned himself in on Thursday.
Another senseless shooting
Another senseless shooting spree happened, this time in North Carolina, where 6-year-old Kinsley White was shot in the face. Her mother Ashley Hilderbrand and father William White were also wounded, William seriously.
This incident happened around 8p.m. on April 18, in Gaston County. Neighbors told local news that “a group of kids were playing basketball when the ball bounced into the alleged gunman’s yard.” White instantly rushed to protect his daughter and took the brunt of the gunfire.
Singletary, who was reportedly “enraged” by the bouncing ball, “grew angry and ran down the street as he fired at a neighbor. Then he came back and began shooting at the family, including the young daughter who needed stitches on her face.” William White “reportedly tried to draw gunfire toward him to keep his kids safe before he was struck in the back.”

The young girl is confused. “We don’t even know the man,” she told reporters. “Why did you shoot my daddy and me? Why did you shoot a kid’s dad?” Apparently he has a history of violence. He can’t be trusted with a hammer any more than he can with a gun.
Mother Ashley Hilderbrand was “grazed by a bullet and is recovering at home with her daughter.” It’s a miracle nobody was killed because neighbors say he “kept shooting until he was out of bullets.” As Ashley relates, “he looked at my husband and my daughter and told them, ‘I’m going to kill you,‘”
The 24-year-old suspect took off and evaded police until Thursday. Even before he turned himself in, they had the charges ready on “four counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.”
Updates trickling in
Late breaking updates add some missing information and provide details on the shooting suspect’s violent criminal history. WBTV relates that on Thursday afternoon Singletary surrendered to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Tampa, Florida.
They also note that after the ball rolled into his yard, he “allegedly went inside his house, got a gun,” and then began his vicious assault. He’s also “accused of already having a history with yelling at kids in the area.”
Recently, in December, Singletary “allegedly assaulted a woman.” That time, instead of shooting he used an assault hammer. This was no ordinary construction claw model but a deadly “mini-sledgehammer.”
Where are all the hammer registries and background checks? Someone in Congress needs to craft some legislation because hammer attacks are as out of control as ones involving firearms. Just ask Paul Pelosi. For that attack, Singeltary was charged with “assault with intent to inflict serious injury, kidnapping and communicating threats.” They let him out on a $250,000 secured bond.
Another update notes that “Singletary had been staying at the home for less than a month and would complain about toys and balls being on his property.” Hailey Martin, age 17, “was outside when shots rang out.”
She notes it’s sad “to see little kids scatter, running for their lives. This neighborhood has always been peaceful, quiet. There’s always kids running around.” Police are also reportedly adding charges “because bullets went into a nearby home.“
