Republicans on the House Committee on Homeland Security wanted to “hear directly from residents impacted by the border crisis.” So, on Wednesday, March 15, they took a field trip to McAllen, Texas.
Democrats didn’t want their faces rubbed in the dirt so they stayed as far from there as they could get.
The purpose of the formal hearing was to investigate the link between border chaos and policies cooked up by Joe Biden and his Minister of Domestic Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

Everyone knows there’s been a record-breaking spike in the number of invading illegal aliens. This was the second hearing on the subject so far this year held in the Rio Grande Valley.
Committee Chair Mark Green of Tennessee got things off to a fiery start by accusing Biden and Mayorkas in his opening statement of “violating the laws written by Congress and signed by the former president.”
It’s clear to Green that Mayorkas “wants nothing more than to flood the country with people.” There’s a big problem with that approach. “The problem with that is, it’s empowered the narco-human trafficking, terrorist cartels.” The ongoing border crisis is making criminals wealthy at America’s expense.
When CBP Chief Raul Ortiz took the witness stand, he testified that his stretch of the border “has seen over 9,000 migrant encounters so far this year.” His big worry is that his agents can’t cope with the hypocrisy.
He’s “worried about the well-being of their agents, expressing that 17 CBP agents died by suicide in 2022.” Every criminal they catch gets let go anyway. Leadership, Ortiz accused, has lost it.
Lost operational control
The situation along our southern boundary line in Texas, right now, is that CBP does not “currently have operational control over the border.” He called Mayorkas a liar. They have seen more “criminal aliens” apprehended “in the last 24 months than they’ve seen previously.” All because Mayorkas won’t enforce any consequences. Not only that, they’re far outnumbered.
“We need more officers on the front lines.” When local Sheriff Brad Coe of Kinney County, Texas, was sworn in, he “described the area as being under siege by illegal immigrants.”
“My office has six full-time deputies and eight part-time to cover the 1,370 square miles of the county. This causes large areas of the county to go unpatrolled.” The “coyote” smugglers can practically smell where the holes in coverage are. Ortiz was happy that Biden is at least considering denying some asylum claims.

“Every policy that allows us to repatriate or reduce the flow of migrants is certainly going to increase our operational effectiveness and our ability to control that border.”
Democrats prefer to hide their head in the sand and pretend the crisis is nothing but Republican rhetoric. According to the top Democrat member, “after careful consideration, Committee Democrats have decided not to participate in the Republicans’ field hearing this week.”
Their little snit came after they scheduled witnesses. “Unfortunately, it has become clear that Republicans planned to politicize this event from the start.” Translation: “Anything we say will only make us look like total idiots.” Rather than try to defend the indefensible, they decided to sit it out and sulk. As far away from the border as they can get.
