The House Speaker race just got a bit of a wrench thrown into it.
Israel’s war with Hamas has definitely created more urgency in getting a Speaker elected to provide aid for Israel.
This could push the election for House Speaker up significantly.
Forced Hand
The bottom line here is that the GOP needs to get on the same page and get a permanent Speaker put in place ASAP.
The pro tem Speaker has limited powers, and Speaker Pro Tem Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) does not seem like he really wants to push his authority.
Congress should already be working on packages to help Israel, and they need to get passed ASAP to help Israel crush this threat, so we can expect movement rather quickly.
This comes down to Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Steve Scalise (R-N.J.).
Let’s get the vote over with and ensure that the caucus is all on the same page because we cannot have another fiasco like we had with McCarthy.
I believe that will not be the case here because regardless of who wins, I think the other person will throw his support behind the winner and we will have a unanimous vote, or close to it.
I would also note that former Speaker McCarthy (R-CA) needs to take the bull by the horns here and tell his holdout supporters, if he has any, to get behind the nominee the caucus puts forward.
We simply cannot give Democrats any more ammunition to use against us in the upcoming election.
