ISIS, also known as ISIL or the Islamic State, rose to prominence in 2014 when it declared a caliphate in Iraq and Syria. It has also claimed responsibility for numerous deadly attacks throughout the Middle East, such as Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that “Hamas brought ISIS flags to the massacre, Israeli children, women, and men” while adding, “Hamas is worse than ISIS.”

Blinken has highlighted the brutality of Hamas, which includes beheadings and burning victims – something that was seen during the rise of power for ISIS as well. He has also expressed his support for Israel amid its conflict with Hamas by saying, “As long as America exists, you’ll never have to [defend yourself] alone” while stressing that “no country can or would tolerate the slaughter of its citizens” like what happened in Israel recently at the hands of Hamas militants. The U.S. and many other countries worldwide have officially designated both ISIS and Hamas as foreign terrorist organizations due to their actions against innocent people worldwide.
