Democrat Senator Bob Menendez Facing Charges From DOJ

It has been reported that the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is looking into possible criminal charges against Democratic senator, Bob Menendez.

This comes after an extensive investigation by The Wall Street Journal.

It appears that prosecutors are expected to meet with his lawyers in the coming weeks before a final decision is made.

What exactly has the DOJ uncovered?

The U.S Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York has been investigating Senator Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, over whether they received gifts in exchange for political favors.

Additionally, investigators have looked into a contract between a New Jersey businessman and Egyptian officials regarding halal meat exports from America to Egypt.

It was also revealed that Senator Menendez hosted meetings between business representatives and Egyptian officials back in 2018 at his own office.

Evidently, prosecutors have already contacted those close to Menendez while sending out subpoenas as well.

His spokesperson however stated that he was unaware of how far-reaching these investigations were going to be when speaking with The Wall Street Journal about this development.

Perhaps one of the most interesting points from this case is how it relates to a federal investigation from 2015 during Obama’s presidency which involved Salomon Melgen, a Florida eye doctor who provided flights on private jets and vacations in return for favors from Senator Menendez.

Both men denied having any knowledge of this until 2017 when it ended in a mistrial due to an inability to reach a verdict amongst jurors.

Furthermore, Melgen was convicted on Medicare fraud charges in 2017 but was pardoned by President Trump—making this entire ordeal even more convoluted than it already seems.
